Conosciuta come uno dei pilastri dei Rachel’s, insieme a Christian Frederickson e Jason Noble, la Grimes, a sei anni di distanza dall’ultimo disco dell’ensemble statunitense (“Systems/Layers“), esce con una raccolta di brani inediti, nati inizialmente per accompagnare un progetto visivo di Greg King.
Oggi i quattordici episodi di “Book Of Leaves (For Solo Piano)” assumono una propria identità, staccandosi sia dalla loro origine sia dal passato musicale di Rachel. Intimi e minimali (come fu solo “Music For Egon Schele“), brevi sino all’eccesso ed altamente evocativi. Dei bozzetti d’autore, fra vuoti e pieni.

Tom Russell – Blood And Candle Smoke (Proper/2009)

Febbraio 2009, Tucson – Arizona, al Wave Lab Studios di Craig Schumacher comincia la nuova svolta artistica di uno dei più grandi cantori della cultura america. Tom Russell ha scritto pagine indimenticabili per Johnny Cash, Guy Clark, Dave Alvin e più recentemente K.D Lang ma non ha mai raggiunto un successo proporzionato al proprio talento. Ora vicino ai sessanta si rimette in gioco formando una band stellare con la voce di Gretchen Peters e i Calexico al gran completo.
Il risultato è uno splendido affresco della frontiera, le storie sono magnifiche visioni americane, dalle lotte sindacali di “The Most Dangerous Woman in America”, al misticismo religioso di “Guadalupe”, allo scorrere dei fiumi lungo gli stati e le città con il carico si storie e personaggi incontrati nel passaggio di “American River”, fino all’amore senza speranza di “Darkness Visible”.
“Blood And Candle Smoke” è un disco epico, dove country western e tex mex si fondono con la magia ricreata dall’inconfodibile tromba di Jacob Valenzuela e dalla voce profonda di Tom così vicina e simile a quella dell’indimenticabile “man in black”.

Sam Baker – Cotton (Music Road Records/2009)

Sam Baker è un sopravissuto, sofferenza e dolore, fiducia e riscatto sono gli ingredienti del romanzo della vita del cinquantacinquenne texano.
Nel 1986 durante uno dei suoi viaggi in America Latina è coinvolto in un attentato del gruppo terroristico “Sendero Luminoso” che causò su un treno in Perù decine di vittime, Sam ne uscì vivo ma gravemente ferito alle gambe, ai reni e alla parte del cervello che controlla la parola.
Dopo una lunghissima riabilitazione torna alla vita affidando la memoria della sua esperienza alla musica, nel 2004 firma il suo esordio “Mercy”, seguito nel 2007 da “Pretty words” e ora chiudendo la trilogia della rinascita con questa meraviglioso “Cotton”.
Un canto strascicato che sa di frontiera e miseria, il sud duro e aspro che cerca la forza di ignorare le ingiustizie, un commovente attaccamento alla vita, la penna di Cormac McCarthy e il suono del maestro Townes Van Zandt, le struggenti ballate pianistiche che hanno la classe del Randy Newman dei tempi migliori, questo e tanto altro in queste tredici struggenti e traballanti canzoni di un grande e misconosciuto autore contemporaneo.

Australian Songs #9: Firekites

Qualche stagione fa parte dell’intellighenzia sarebbe impazzita per un gruppo come i Firekites. Rimandi alla Notwist attraverso arpeggi acustici e derivazioni post (abbastanza edulcorate), per un ipotesi folktronica intima ed emozionale. Questo ad un giudizio sommario: andando oltre si dovrebbe apprezzare il sapore o’rourkiano nella miscela fra rumorismo (soffuso) e canzone, abile ad interagire con un intimismo sintetico e dilatato.
Come saranno recepiti oggi non lo sappiamo, nel caso accettaste un consiglio il primo Ottobre “The Bowery” uscirà in Europa per Own Records.

Giant Hand

No matter what mood I am in, I always end up listening to sad and obscure Canadian folk singers; as a friend from Calgary pointed out, that does not sound so bad after all!
This time around I stumbled upon the MySpace page of Giant Hand, a young Ottawa-based artist who goes by the name of Kirk Ramsay: the first song on his page was still playing when I logged into my iTunes account to download his debut album “Coming Home”. It did not take me long to realize that Kirk is a talented artist, who performs his acoustic music with sparse and precise arrangements that showcase the depth of his songwriting.
The more often I listen to “Coming Home”, the more enchanted I become. Kirk’s voice sounds so vulnerable and he really wears his heart on his sleeve when he sings.
Legend has it Kirk picked up a guitar only a year and a half ago, after watching the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Now he is a top friend on his hero’s MySpace page. Giant Hand is ready to hit the big time.

Great albums of the past: Art Of Fighting – Second Storey

Art Of Fighting’s second full-length, Second Storey (Trifekta/2004), made me think of The God Machine’s Scenes From The Second Storey, but actually the title comes from an obscure Japanese video game, Star Ocean: the Second Story. That should be no surprise, since the band itself is named after a video game. You might expect something funny or at least entertaining from this Melbourne-based quartet, but Art Of Fighting explore the darker sides of human emotion, and this is not an appropriate soundtrack to your favorite video games. Based around the songwriting talent and wonderful vocals of Ollie Browne, Art Of Fighting create music that is epic and inspiring.
Album opener and first single “Along The Run” sets the tone for the release brilliantly, with the soft sound of guitars, strings, and piano and the awareness of a love long gone: “And every minute I spent with you / another minute that I could use / to show why our time was done”.
“Your Easy Part” is that kind of pop song that won’t easily leave your mind after just one listen, and at the end of the song you’re left wondering why such good songs can’t make it to the top of international charts, but then you realize we all live in a cruel world. “Break for Me” flows along at a slow pace like Red House Painters’ songs used to do. It’s a dramatically intense and deep track, with the standout lyrics, “now that all the many ways that you occupy your days / have left you without hope / you’re caught between the way and not knowing the way.”
“Busted, Broken, Forgotten,” “Real Time,” and “Heart Translation” feature Browne’s melancholic and heartbreaking voice over sparsely strummed guitars, beautifully arranged strings, and gentle drums. “Two Rivers” starts quietly and showcases the slow-core grandeur of the Australian four-piece before suddenly bursting into a furious rage with powerful guitars and drums that slowly return to their most comfortable soft and mellow sounds. “Where Trouble Lived” features bassist Peggy Frew on vocals, and her sweet voice adds a different feel to this incredibly well-crafted pop song.
“Sing Song” started life as a weird kind of hip-hop looped trance-like song in its initial demo (!!!) and captures the intensity and dynamic range of Art of Fighting. Luckily there’s nothing left of that hip-hop flavor, yet the song is different from the others on Second Storey and is reminiscent of the best rock ballads that Buffalo Tom wrote in the mid-90s. “Come Round & Show Me” is the climax of this wonderful album: the song shines with melodic and soft guitars, a perfect and subtle rhythmic session, and the gorgeous voice of Ollie Browne, who never sounded so desperate and suffering. This may well be the best song written by Art Of Fighting to date.
What makes Art of Fighting and their music so unique and amazing is the way these guys succeed in being so heartfelt and melancholic yet so incredibly melodic. I have played this album to death, and hopefully you will do the same!

Il fatto che “Two Nuns And a Pack Mule” sia uscito insieme a “Umber” e “Tweez” potrebbe far dimenticare qualsiasi altro avvenimento dell’epoca, caduta del muro e morte di George Simenon compresi.
La storia, pertanto, dovreste conoscerla alla perfezione. Prima furono i Big Black: ciclonica recessione emotiva, scoramento assoluto, brutta musica (quindi perfetta, si intende), scetticismo e maniacalità selvaggia…eccetera eccetera. Insomma, c’era “Kerosene” e da un po’ era arrivato Steve Albini.
Poi lo scioglimento ed il progetto Rapeman (con Rey Washam e David Sims): durata minima e necessaria (stagione 88-89, si sa: l’Ep “Budd” come meraviglioso incipit e l’album in questione) per raggiungere- nell’ambito- l’apice richiesto. Dove finiscono i Sonic Youth ed iniziano gli Slint hanno scritto e detto. Forse andando anche qualche metro avanti (e, per inerzia, indietro) aggiungiamo. Noise tribale, hardcore introverso eppure esplicito nel negare il prima fregandosene del dopo. Più cerebrale nell’essere sempre alienante: trattasi di rabbia metallica creata (anche) da un rifiuto assoluto per il compromesso, urlando e strepitando con essenzialità ossessiva. A suo modo un disco definitivo destinato ad esserlo anche fra vent’anni, a dispetto di tutti i figli dei fiori.

Perchè, nel marasma, è uscito l’ottavo disco di Willy Vlautin e soci. E se le vette di “Thirtheen Cities“ vengono solo intraviste, alcune chicche i Richmond Fontaine le regalano sempre, come i racconti brevi “The Boyfriends” e “The Pull“. Forse scegliendo, ascoltato “We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River” nell’insieme, più la somma che il particolare. A ottobre consueto giro in Italia.

Telekinesis

Non sarà forse un disco che ci cambierà la vita questo esordio degli americani, di Seattle, Telekinesis – uscito qualche mese fa negli Stati Uniti su Merge e approdato in questi giorni in Europa grazie alla sempre più rock oriented Morr Music (che aggiunge alla scaletta originale ben 5 bonus tracks) – ma è innegabile il fatto che al suo interno si trovino un pugno di killer pop tunes che non possono che fare del bene. Prodotto dal Death Cab For Cutie Chris Walla, Telekinesis! è un CD che presenta al mondo il songwriting fresco e solare, tra indie rock e power pop, di Michael Benjamin Lerner. Un buon biglietto da visita, niente da dire.

Sempre Australia, sempre Melbourne. Ma ci allontaniamo dalla consueta scena slow folk. I Tarcutta (Peter Barrett, Justin Buckley e Justin Wheelahan) sciolgono melodie post rock attraverso un approccio strumentale che miscela Chicago (primissimi Tortoise) e Austin (Explosions In The Sky) . Con qualche rimando a gioventù sonica e visioni space. Il debutto, omonimo, è uscito quest’anno per Hidden Shoal Rec.
