The Thoughts is a Seattle-based band made up of Ian Williams (vocals and guitar), Katie Mosehauer (violin and harp) and Jon Horwath (drums).
The trio came about in 2007. Ian Williams and Jon Horwath, who have played together for a long time joined with Seattle violinist Katie Mosehauer. The band self-released their first album, Consider the Bear, in 2009.
They tell their stories with a mix of savagery and sweetness, at times whispering honeyed words in the ear and at others wailing in reckless abandon. Undertows of graceful string harmonies are pitted against complex, impressionistic percussion in arrangements that are pretty, violent, intimate, and unexpected.
The Thoughts brought the project of their new album to Kickstarter, raised $5,000 and came up with the amazingly beautiful album “I Will Keep You Here”, released on January 27th.
The songs on “I Won’t Keep You Here” are filled with all manner of ukuleles, harps, guitars, glockenspiels, violins, and percussion.
“I Will Keep You Here” is one of the best chamber-folk albums I’ve ever heard. Do yourselves a favor and buy this masterpiece on the band’s website.

Arriva ancora una volta da Seattle una delle più piacevoli sorprese in ambito folk. Questa volta è il turno di Ivan & Alyosha (dal nome di due personaggi del libro di Dostoevskij “I Fratelli Karamazov”), un quartetto formato da Tim Wilson, Pete Wilson, Ryan Carbary e Tim Kim, che si è imposto all’attenzione del pubblico più attento l’anno scorso con l’EP di debutto “The Verse, The Chorus”.
Il primo febbraio uscirà il secondo EP della band, “Fathers Be Kind”. L’Ep è stato registrato in un fienile che si trova a Snohomish, 45 minuti fuori da Seattle, convertito in uno studio di registrazione.
Tim Wilson, principale autore delle canzoni del gruppo, usa il recente matrimonio e la paternità come base per le sue canzoni. Brani come “Living for Someone” e “Fathers Be Kind,” riflettono infatti le difficoltà di chi cerca di trovare un equilibrio tra il desiderio di fare musica e i pressanti impegni famigliari. “Everything Is Burning” è una delle ballate acustiche più toccanti ascoltate negli ultimi anni, mentre il singolo scelto per anticipare l’uscita dell’EP è “Glorify”:

“I left my family and my home
to fight the battle on my own
I stole a car and drove away
but in my hate St. Paul did say
Glorify the Lord above
with your drink and making love
Glorify the Lord my son
with your whisky and your gun”.

The Skeleton Dead sono un duo di Londra formato da Tom Sharples e Claire Wakeman nell’estate del 2010. La band ha reso disponibile in streaming quattro brani e tanto mi è bastato per rimanere completamente rapito dalla favolosa musica suonata dai due.
Siamo dalle parti dei primi A Weather, grazie a brani acustici resi magici dall’intrecciarsi della voce maschile con quella femminile.
Cresce l’attesa per nuovi brani, nel frattempo mi godo quelli appena pubblicati.
